UN warns El Niño could wreak havoc across continents, trigger global economic shocks

The United Nations has warned that an exceptionally powerful El Niño could send shockwaves through the global economy, intensify humanitarian crises and expose millions of people across Asia, Africa and Latin America to destructive weather extremes.At a joint news conference in Geneva on Wednesday, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher warned that the consequences would extend far beyond the countries directly hit by extreme weather.“It will create economic shocks for the global economy and drive further conflict, displacement, migration.”“The next two weeks are the critical window to act before that damage is done,” he said, warning that countries across Asia and the Pacific must prepare for droughts, floods and cyclones.
